FONU
FOCUS ON NORTHERN UGANDA (FONU)
A non-profit organization (NGO) which was formed in Lira, Northern Uganda. It started in the northern part of Uganda but we intend to spread the organization worldwide to achieve our goals. Our goal is to put in place a nursing\rehabilitation center because the people of Uganda namely the children were left orphaned. We also intend to build an orphanage\school to house these children
The reason for the carnage and suffering of our people is the result of the tragedy caused by The Lord Resistance army (LRA) . On January 21, 2004, these rebels attacked the camp where the displaced people were staying having already been run from their respective homes. The rebels entered the camp killing randomly as they went resulting in the "Borlonyo Massacre". This forced displacement of elderly women, men and thousands of children from camps to the streets in fear of further attacks, homeless and helpless. They abducted children and raised them as child soldiers. Many of the families died from starvation and wounds suffered in this attack those who survived were taken to the camps living there for seven (7) years. The conditions were deplorable and food was given once a month without thought for family size. During that time the UN (United Nations) "World Food Program" was provided for people once in a month. These rations were distributed by the UN organizations and consisted of (6) cups of beans, (25) kgms of posho and nothing else. People starved because there was not enough to feed a family of four (4) much less a mother of say eight (8) children for a month. A typical day in the camp was not productive or safe resulting in many cases of HIV infected women who would become pregnant and subsequently would die from the lack of medical attention and the mere stress of their situation. The women were subjected to sexual abuse from both government soldiers and rebels. When the were ordered them to leave the camps (July 11, 2006) and them to return to their respectives villages there were no homes left in the villages to return to. They had all been burned by the rebels and there has been no support provided to the people by the government .
Since the devastation in Lira District, Uganda our organization FONU, had already started our recovery program in the burned out areas in anticipation of their return. Up to this day we are supporting the orphaned and those children whose parents have been so much affected by the war and many years of encampment. Many of these children are very bright. We support them with materials to go to school and the paying of their school fees. Our organization also support victims of HIV/AIDS .
That is how FONU came up with the program of recovery. We have stepped in and helped many people and we are still continuing with our organization support helping the lives of many physically and emotionally hurt damaged families.
